Here we are, the Seeking Kali Comix are out and flying off the shelves! Seeking Kali is William Evertson, Susan Shulman and Ria Vanden Eynde.

Issue #1 came out last year ...

William Evertson explains:

Who doesn't love a good who-done-it? In our first Seeking Kali Comix issue we arrive at Art World hi jinks in mid action. The issue ends with some intriguing questions to address in issue 2 and beyond.

Of course the biggest mystery is why is Seeking Kali taking studio time to make limited run hand made comic books instead of working on our more serious works. After all, recent works have dealt with the Occupy movement and women's rights. Why not. Our collaborations over the past two years have run the gamut of print editions, artist books, theater, curating artist calls, video and animation. The Seeking Kali Collective continues to evolve ways of thinking about art process and especially the nature of collaborative efforts.

One way in which we work is to use the Google+ hangouts to discuss potential projects, progress on projects or opportunities to exhibit. The video conferencing is a form of virtual studio space that ideas great and small are discussed, discarded, debated or worked on. In the course of hashing out strategies we often bump up against the usual artists dilemmas; time, money and opportunity. (actually mostly lack of) Our Kalicorp Art Mysteries is our way of taking a tongue in cheek look see into the problems that vex artists. Fellow artist/ writer Philip Hartigan received our first issue and wrote a wonderfully thoughtful piece on the Seeking Kali Collective. He actually explains us better than we do. Philip is a Chicago based artist and his blog Praeterita covers not only his own work but many other visual artist that use narrative in their work.

Our second comic is now in the mail. Kalicorp Art Mysteries started as a "one of" project, meant to highlight some of our current projects in the 'advertising'. It turned out to be a lot of fun to produce a comic look at the mysteries of trying to navigate the Art World. We're artists....We all want to exhibit our work...we want to sell a few pieces...we want that damn grant! So, we soldier along putting in the studio time and filling the grant applications, networking and all the rest. Plus looking at a lot of art and wondering, "how the hell is THAT getting shown." So to take our frustrations to a new level we're working on a limited run comic that explains the Mysteries of the Art World.

Take all three of us at Kalicorp, (William Evertson Susan Shulman and Ria Vanden Eynde) and after an evening of exploring our research, we've come to the conclusion that.....well....can't just spoil the fun but we throw everything we've got into explaining the Art World to the layperson.

And a word about our "guest villains" - They're actually some of the nicest and most talented artists out there. We include links to their websites and art, be sure to check them out.

A Seeking Kali Artist Call:

"SEEKING MEDUSA"

Curated by Ria Vanden Eynde, Susan Shulman and William Evertson

Seeking Medusa is presently conceived of as an online exhibition of artist works based on interpretations of the archetype Medusa for an online exhibition on the Seeking Kali blog.

The inspiration behind Seeking Medusa:
In the Medusa myth, as related by the Roman poet Ovid, Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, priestess in Athena's temple, but when the Poseidon, the god of the sea, raped her in Athena's temple, the enraged and jealous Athena, choosing not to punish Poseidon, transformed Medusa's beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.

Medusa’s image has since been frozen in time as a petrifying and petrified head. That way, she has been interpreted in art by Rubens, Caravaggio, Bӧcklin, Dali, her image has been used on warriors’ breast plates and on flags, as Versace’s logo, she has been discussed as archetype in feminism and psychology.

Medusa’s archetype is linked to Athena’s. Athena adopts the voice of the father/men in order to be heard in the culture, she uses a voice that is not her own and hence cuts her off from her self and her inner power. In this sense, Medusa's severed head symbolizes the wound of the powerful woman disconnecting the mind from the body, from instincts, intuition, and eros and the loss of authentic voice. Medusa’s hair locks are snakes representing a creative, vital life force and a more fluid, relational, and embodied consciousness. In order for Athena to become whole again, she needs to remove her armor and dissolve the rigid boundaries that keep her defended from her self and others and that keep Medusa dismembered, literally and figuratively petrified in Western consciousness.

Through this art call, we want try to restore Medusa’s authentic voice and beauty and loosen the literal interpretations that have frozen her in a silent scream.

Gallerist/Artist Jennifer Kosharek and I are organizing a group show F**K the big C! next September at Jennifer's gallery eve-N-odd with works by Betty Esperanza, Branka Djordjevic and myself. We're showing how cancer affects our individual art making practice while doing our small bit for raising cancer awareness.

Betty Esperanza, Branka Djordjevic and I will show works at the eve-N-odd Gallery, 645 Central Avenue #11, St. Petersburg, FL 33701, USA in September this year. We plan a long summer of promoting the show so as to make it count beyond a gallery exhibition, to get the message across that while we are changed by cancer and so is our individual art making practice; we emerge as stronger women and artists. All three we feel enriched by the experience and are decided to Live our Art Life to the fullest. That's how we're giving cancer the middle finger.

F**K THE BIG C! show runs through September, opens September 8 with live performances, Gallery Walk on September 10. Donations go to local cancer support projects. I will be showing pieces of my blog painting2cancers and have made signed prints available for pre-order here. Yesterday I got cornered and verbally harassed by a really crass guy in town. It's not the first time neither. This guy made some very crude remarks about my 'breasts'. I, baffled looked down my dress thinking a button got undone and my scars are on display. Because, after the reconstruction, I'm sensitive to that. But all is clear. So I looked straight at the guy, said 'thx for that' and added in my mind 'for ure rudeness, u moron', gave him my Medusa Gaze, which stops dogs (!) in their tracks when they fiercely run towards me, carefully maneuvered passed him and walked away, still shaky.
I was still thinking over what happened as I angrily trimmed our garden hedge. I realized I actually thought I was off those guys' radar being more mature, with a scar on my neck and both breasts amputated. I must have dropped my guard somewhat. Silly cos in the mirror, I see a radiant woman. In the meanwhile I had also told my seekingkali collaborators about it. Susan Shulman suggested a blog and Bill Evertson made me the above image, thereby creating a project:

Bill told me there are a couple of artists that do this type of guerrilla projection. There has f.i. also been some of that going up on Chinese consulates with Ai Weiwei's picture. He explained it's about driving up somewhere and projecting until police show up to get rid of the 'nuisance', rightly remarking that this kind of art-action probably addresses the 'silence' in societies (!) about this kind of harassment well ...

LuAnn Palazzo is curating volume 23 of A Book About Death. This time, submissions will get bound. I wanted to go a little Kahlo-Diary-ish for my submission. The theme, 'The Ties That Bind,' evoke negative thoughts and feelings in me, so there goes.

KaliRay Flip Book by Seeking Kali!

The Seeking Kali color version of the book that is currently being shown in the Un Libro Sulla Morte Omaggio a Ray Johnson exhibition in Treviso, Italy is available as a limited edition.

This 4.5" x 5.5" artist book is produced in an edition of 20 with 6 artist proof copies. They are the collaborative effort of William Evertson, (USA), Susan Shulman, (Canada) and Ria Vanden Eynde, (Belgium). The 120 page book is printed with archival inks and is hand bound. Each copy is numbered, dated and signed by the three artists.
Our book began with the idea that for the Italian exhibit we wanted to produce this flip style edition and make it appear that we are waving farewell to the late Ray Johnson, an artist whose influence we all fondly acknowledge. The images used in the book were photographed in each artist's home location of Canada, Belgium and USA then reassembled to produce the merging of the artists into a single person waving. For this edition the color symbols were introduced by Susan Shulman.

Faxination Japan!-Restoration Support!

[FAXINATION JAPAN] is launched to support restoration after the earthquake in east Japan. Studio members and directors at artist run space “XYZ collective” are organizing the project and artists from Japan and abroad join. We sell artworks received by fax machine from around the world, and donate 100 % of sales to Japan Red Cross.

XYZ collective, an artist run space, originally planned to open in 20th of March. But the opening is postponed because of the earthquake. The space supports experimental events both domestic and foreign. Also the place aim to establish network here in Tokyo with artists as they gather here. With this earthquake and nuclear crisis, directors discussed what we can and should do in the catastrophic damage. Should we stand up as artists or evacuate as victims of disaster?

As conclusion, we decided to start project [FAXINATION JAPAN] at XYZ collective.

First, we prepare a fax machine at the venue.

We ask artists around the world to fax us paintings/pictures/messages on A4 paper. The sent works on A4 paper will be hung on the wall and sold. The 100% of profit from sales will be donated to Japan Red Cross.

The videos related to Seeking Kali, the collab project I'm curating with Susan Shulman and Bill Evertson will be shown on Archetypology, a show organized by Seeking Kali artist and friend of ours, Ivana Režek. The Seeking Kali-call originated from a fb-discussion with Bill and Susan and the thread grew into a fb-group and over a hundred entries as we explored the myth, paradox and cultural identity wrapped up in this Hindu deity. We prepared a dvd documenting video submissions, the shadow theater by Bill, all the Seeking Kali-artist call-submissions and made an amazing little booklet with images of our own Kali-art pieces in it.
We are now offering the complete 2010 artist call in a dvd format for those who want an archive of the project. This contains 80 minutes of content ranging from painting, collage and mixed technique to video, music and poetry. All in all, this is a fascinating cross cultural look at Kali by artists from around the world. For more info, visit seekingkali.

A reading of the acrostic poem on Ray Johnson I wrote on the back cover of my entry for 'Un Libro Sulla Morte, Omaggio a Ray Johnson,' A Book About Death Italia 2011.

In the booklet are my acrostic poems, written for dearthyroid.org, they suggest a word and us patients write a poem for thyroid cancer awareness. Here are all the poems that are included so far:

(1)Ignorance:

Inside my thyroid lobe
Grew a nasty cancer
Named Papillary.
Once discovered,
Removal followed.
After that, RAI.
Now Tg will not subside,
Cancer remnants lingering?
Exasperation floods my mood ...

(2)Never:

Now, I live,
Every day, I live,
Vigorously so, sometimes exhaustingly so,
Every breath I take,
Radiating LIFE.

(3)Health:

Healed, they said, pretty convinced.
Excised thyroid,
And RAI on top.
Latest checkups, pretty worrying...
Tg behaving weird.
Healed? Maybe not.

Jolly miserable at times
On TSH suppression.

Postcards From the Edge is a Visual AIDS benefit show and sale of original, postcard-sized works on paper by established and emerging artists. All works are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The works are signed on the back and exhibited so the artists' signatures cannot be seen. While buyers receive a list of all participating artists, they don't know who created which piece until purchased.
All proceeds support the programs of Visual AIDS. Visual AIDS utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving the legacy -- because AIDS IS NOT OVER!

All you need to do is make a 4by6, fill in the entry form and send it off to them. My entry for last year's event sold, let's hope it sells this year too! :)

Bill Evertson, Susan Shulman and I are still seeking Hindu goddess Kali. Bill's last attempt culminated in a fantastic shadow theater that was premiered at CW Post Campus at Long Island University, at the Ray Johnson and A Book About Death Show, November 3rd.

Hallelujah I think I finally had one ;) The schematics of it bubbling up in my brain are-no doubt-way more complicated, especially in my chaotic head, but, well, I like clean lines leading up to a bulb ... lol.

I've come to think again about what my 2 cancer trajectories have given me in terms of vitality... Quite a lot. I want the pieces of my (he)art to travel, all over the globe to lead a life of their own amongst friends and people I feel connected to-and I've been given lots of those too.

Well ... it's all happening!
One of the pieces I submitted to an art call by Mobius.Inc in Boston, MA, The Prostitution of Art, made me feel all of that amplified. Funny how that happened. I've participated in many a call so far and many a piece of mine traveled. You can check this log Art on the Road ;) My friend Bill Evertson went to the opening and shared a video about the exhibit, co-curated by another friend of mine Jane Hsiaoching Wang and watching it, I just felt a part of the whole thing ...

Here's my piece, I used a drawing I made when I was in my teens, measuring with Da Vinci ;) I shot it on our ironing board, which to me funnily fits with the theme of the show and then photo-shopped over it.

And here's Bill's video, my piece is at 1.28 in the video, in the magazine Mobius prints for the show :)

The Art Cure!

The Art Cure is a breast cancer awareness art project conceived by international artist and photographer, Tatiana von Tauber-whom I also would like to submit to my other blog the body-nothing else myself ;)

The Art Cure's focus is to introduce the power of art in healing and coping with the dark sides of life while raising funds for charity. Breast cancer victims and survivors are invited to paint a canvas for a silent auction with proceeds benefiting breast cancer awareness and research.

Friday, October 1, 2010 is The Art Cure’s projected opening at Horizon Gallery in downtown Savannah, GA for invited guests and press. Sunday, October 3, 2010 is planned for a public reception. For more information visit the official blog:

Sobre mi intervención en la obra puedes hacer lo que te apetezca, es decir puedes dibujar encima, completarla, etc., etc. Esta parte la he titulado "Arquitectura Interior" pero el título final lo pones tu.'

The following Monday I got the above print, which I was to complete and give the final title to.

I worked on the piece with pastels and named it "Arquitectura Interior-Ausencia," that's "Inner Architecture-Dearth," in English.

Kali is called 'the scary one' of the Hindu Goddesses. Known for her horrific, destructive, cruel powers, she is also nurturer and creator, paradoxical to say the least. She is seen as archetypal for the feminine force. As divine mother, she gives birth to new worlds, sustains them and absorbs them in an ongoing cycle of her own opening and closing ¹. I personally feel spoken to by her no-nonsense way of eradicating negative thoughts and bad habits in the minds of her followers². As the author on religionfacts.com says ,"she will lop off your inflated ego in no time flat if you ask her, and she offers no guarantees that the process will be painless." What's not to like about that? ;)

In March I participated in Branka Djordjević's project 'A Painting a Day keeps the Apple away,' in which we were to make an art piece on a 4by4. I sent three pieces. Participating artists received a piece back from Branka, mounted on canvas. Completely special! I love mine!
